The story of the Swedish distillery Mackmyra traces back to 1998 and a group of friends meeting at a ski lodge. A debate took place about why Sweden had no whisky distillery and if whisky could be produced in Sweden. Fast forward two decades and the Mackmyra distillery is now very well established and with its own distinctive style. Use of Swedish oak, in some of the maturing casks being one issue, this being slower maturing than American oak. Then the very long summer days seem to give the Swedish barley a particular sweetness. Whilst it may not alter flavours Mackmyra is certainly somewhat unique with its tall gravity fed distillery. Now is your chance to taste Mackmyra, January 2020 will be the first visit to Harrow Whisky Festival by the distiller itself.
